Connect two computers and share hard disk or drive files between them

Got a new laptop at home or friend has brought at your place ? Now you want to transfer files between them, that also huge size files like movies and in large number. Pen drive won’t work. You may think by connecting PCs with Harddisk to USB cable. You have to purchase the cable for that also you need to do hardware work for that.

Best way to do so is connecting them with Ethernet port with ethernet cable. The cable is same you use with your BSNL modem, you can use it to transfer data between two PCs.

Steps:

  1. Connect Ethernet Cable into both PCs.
  2. Configure TCP/IP of ethernet LAN connection as follows.

    IP : Assign unique IP to each PC 172.16.xxx.xxx can be format of IP address. e.g. 172.16.0.2 to one PC and 172.16.0.4 to another.

  3. .Leave the “Default Gateway” and “DNS server” fields blank.
  4. For the subnet mask, It will be assigned automatically. If not (If you can’t see DNS address there) Enter 255.255.0.0 or 255.255.255.0 or 255.255.0.0
  5. Go to run open command prompt by typing “cmd” without quotes. In command prompt type ping other pc’s address e.g. ping 172.16.0.4 , In vista you can ping directly from active search of start menu.
  6. Ping should show successful 4 bytes of transfer and receive.

Important: Please turn of any kind of Firewall before connecting PCs. You may get host unreachable error if firewall is on.

Share Files, Hard disk , Other removable devices, Printer etc on the network we just created.

Right click the hard disk drive or removable media you want to share. Go to properties, In sharing Click I understand what is sharing. Check Share this media/drive on network and Give an unique name.

Accept changes, you will see icon of hand below the drive normal icon.

Tip: If you make both PC’s workgroup name same then PCs will be discovered fast and easily.

In vista in “ Network” you can find such PCs if the network discovery is kept on.
